Newcastle Glass House

There was only one glass house making flint glass recorded by Houghton in Newcastle in 1696. This was likely to be that started by the Dagnia family near the Close Gate in 1691. The family had moved to newcastle in 1684, but initially made only bottles. The drinking glass business was not a great success and the glasshouse closed in 1707. However, this may not have been the first drinking glass house to have been established there, since there are records of a John Racket getting married in Newcastle in 1643. He was probably from the Racket family of vessel-glass makers. In 1645 there was mention of two glass houses 'new buylt' when these were the subject of an agreement between the Common Council of Newcastle and a Mr Harris from Newcastle and a London Merchant. It seems probable that one of these was a drinking glass house. It could be this one that Daniel Tittery was involved in leasing in 1678 (see Philadelphia glass making page).
